Craft Ideas You Missed on Facebook this Week!

3 Jul

This past week I have been posting some fun crafting and cooking ideas that I found inspirational on Pinterest.  I shared them on Facebook for all of our fans to see but here they are again all in one post in case you missed them!

Glue gun some flat rocks to a round piece of felt and you have yourself your very own modern hot pad for your kettle.

Turn an old straw holder from a restaurant into a pencil dispenser! Great for classrooms, Sunday schools, or just to have around the house!

Show up to the 4th of July BBQ with this! Blueberries, watermelon and feta cheese! YUM!

Get an old frame from a garage sale, paint it to match your house, take out the glass and backing, add some hooks and BAM! Instant key holder.

Wrap old coffee cans in rope for a very rustic yet modern bathroom toiletry holder.

It’s the Cat in the Hat and he knows a lot about that! Love this snack for a Dr. Seuss birthday party! Get Switch out the white frosting in between the life savers for some blue frosting and you have yourself an Uncle Sam hat for the 4th of July!

Get some molding from the hardware store, paint it to match your room and then screw it to your wall for a fabulous show rack so that you can always stare at your impressive collection of heels.

Get a magnet board or make your own magnet board (if you’re even more creative), and then place magnetic strips on the scrabble pieces so that you can have a constant words with friends battle in your home!

What is the oddest thing you’ve ever received in the mail? How about a shoe! Try sending out your summer pool party invitations on a flip flop this year!!

Another fun 4th of July treat! Cut ice cream sandwiches in half, place on popsicle stick and roll in red, white, and blue sprinkles. So cute!

Don’t have a use for your kid’s old baby or toddler mattress? Turn it into a love seat just by wrapping it in some elegant fabric, tossing on some throw pillows, and placing it atop some storage containers.

Hope you enjoyed the fun projects we found this week and we look forward to hearing from those of you who have or will be trying these great crafts!

Happy 4th of July!!

From Reclaimed Wood to Wood You Wear

28 May

Welcome The New Rose Ribbon Featured Artist,

Lindsay Zuelich,

Get to know her…

What’s one food that you can’t even be paid to eat: Brains! I could pretty much be paid to eat almost any food, but not sure I could go through with eating brains.

What three things would you take with you if you were stranded on an island: All-in-one wind up battery-free flashlight/radio, whittling knife, and chap stick.

If you could do one thing over, what would it be: I’d do more research and self discovery before attending college.

What quote best describes you: “I am enough of an artist to draw freely upon my imagination.” -Albert Einstein.

About Lindsay:  Lindsay Zuelich grew up working with wood.  Her love for it only grew as she did.  “My art is a labor of love with each cut and sand that I make,” says Zuelich.  Her hand crafted wood line involves accessories for both men and women, including necklaces, earrings, bracelets, rings, belt buckles, money clips, and key chains.

Lindsay likes to collect unusual pieces of wood from roadsides to beach tides and each piece is hand picked and cut uniquely as a part of her creative process.  Each portion of wood will only yield a limited amount of pieces to create with, making each item special.

All of Lindsay’s products are Eco-friendly including the reclaimed wood she uses to hand craft her gifts.  No trees are ever harmed in her selective process of acquiring wood, and even the sawdust is utilized in her home garden, making sure nothing goes to waste.

Wood Wrap Bracelet

This beautiful handmade leather suede bracelet is adorned with a polished wood piece and a blue stone and “love” charm.  The bracelet wraps around the wrist about 6 times on average.  This handmade gift is the epitome of nature, peace, and love and is the perfect gift for all the ladies in your life. Get this bracelet from Rose Ribbon for just $25.oo

Wood Money Clip

Got wood on the brain? Well, this beautiful money clip made out of brass and polished wood does, and it has a stamp to prove it. Show off your love for nature with this fashionable handmade gift, perfect for father’s day or any other holiday.  Get this gift online for just $25.00

Scrimshaw on Wood with Color

25 Mar

Welcome The New Rose Ribbon Featured Artist,

John Houle

Get to know him…

When I’m not doing artwork: I’m probably thinking about it, and what will my next piece be? To me , art is like breathing. I have to do it every day.
The quote that best describes me is: “He would do that  damn Woodburning 24/7 if I did not stop him . He just tunes everything else out” ….That quote is from my fiance.
My recent discovery was: that after 35 years of doing Woodburning, and winning many first place and best in show awards, I found that in one town where I applied for a show, I was informed that they were not interested in my being in the show (first time this has happened).  I was informed there was no relevance to my work . They felt it did not apply to their town . My discovery was that cliques in art still exists, sad to say.
Don’t tell anyone , but: I will prove them wrong .

A Little Bit About John:

John Houle,  the artist,  has an extensive background in 0ils and acrylics, having started painting at an early age . He  won was his first regional contests in second and third grade.  He then studied art under Jacques Rommel at Central Connecticut State College, but after graduation he drifted away from his artistic endeavors.  In the early 80′s he started painting again and found success supplying several galleries in Connecticut and on Cape Cod, Massachusetts.

In 1985 , his late wife placed a wood burner in a Christmas stocking with a bow and a note , stating “see if you can paint over this.”  The change to Pyrography, or wood burning, as it is commonly called, was an awakening for John and quickly became his passion. The technique he uses involves a heated tool with a tip that reaches 950 degrees and the wood used is Birch.  All the detail created is due to the burning of the wood. This art form allows for no error, because with one slip of the hand the piece is ruined.  There are no “do overs”.  This may explain why there are so few wood burners around. The color used in the art is a light wash of acrylic.  It is applied light enough so that the detail of the wood burning and the grain of the wood will clearly show through the wash. They are then coated with UV resistant polyurethane for protection and the rest is history.

John’s work has appeared on Channel 8, Connecticut Style, as well as having the privilege to grace the cover of multiple magazines.  He has garnered many awards in the northeast and his works may be found in galleries in Connecticut and Florida.  Two additional features that makes these works unique is the Tactile effect. You can run your hands over the work to actually feel the indentations and burns while also having the security that each piece is completely one of a kind.  Due to the creative process there are no prints.   Each piece is unique.

John’s one of a kind pieces consist of scrimshaw artwork made by using heat and wood.  The tight grain of the Birch wood allows for intricate and extensive detail and texture.  This miraculous combination of pyrography and acrylic wash handmade gifts are for sale at Rose Ribbon.

Her Company, Her Craft

12 Mar

Please Finally Welcome Rose Ribbon CEO,

Pamela Rondini, as the New Featured Artist

Get to know her…

Rose Ribbon CEO, Pamela Rondini

When I’m not crafting I’m… Spending time with my sweet husband. We like to visit new ‘Top Chef’ restaurants, go to amusement parks, travel, and exercise together.

This quote best describes me…“I believe in pink. I believe that laughing is the best calorie burner. I believe in kissing, kissing a lot. I believe in being strong when everything seems to be going wrong. I believe that happy girls are the prettiest girls. I believe that tomorrow is another day and I believe in miracles.” – Audrey Hepburn

Don’t tell anyone but… I love T.V.! I know it’s a brainless activity, but when I used to need an escape that’s what I would do. Just for an hour or two a night. Now I have shows that I’m addicted to; ‘Survivor’, ‘Castle’, ‘The Mentalist’, ‘The Voice’, and ‘The Vampire Diaries.’

My recent discovery was… That I loved to read! I guess I never considered myself a book worm because I never learned to read for pleasure.  I always hated reading because I only did it for school. In May of 2009, I finally tried reading ONLY for pleasure, and I was hooked! Now I read a new book every three days or so. I love fiction, romance, and paranormal books. I love reading so much that I usually read for at least two hours every night, no matter what time I go to bed. I’m also always being asked by my family and friends for book recommendations, so I joined Goodreads.com and just put a link to my page on the right side of this blog!

A Little Bit About Pamela:

Pam Rondini grew up in the artsy area of New Paltz, NY.  She grew up surrounded by a loving family and an abundance of art and music influences. Her father was a music teacher, so she started playing instruments and singing at a young age. She now has a great appreciation for music of all genres. Her mother loved to craft, make quilts, and paint. All the way through college, Pam would come home, and her mom would gather her girlfriends and have a craft party. It instilled a happy and sentimental association with making handmade gifts and doing crafts. She also loves giving gifts! There’s a selfish pleasure in hunting and finding the perfect gift for someone you care about. Watching them open it, be surprised, and truly love the gift they receive. It’s one of the reasons she started Rose Ribbon. Check out her new Affordable 2012 Spring Earring Collection:

DIY Kids Wall Decor & Photography

2 Mar

As some of you know, I have a great passion for DIY and photography. Through one of my photography classes I found a fun way to combine them both!

We love to decorate kids’ rooms and make them fun and bright, but what do you put on their walls? You want it to be appropriate, something that reflects their interests, and if possible have it be meaningful. Here’s an easy way to do it, and it will be a fun thing to do together:

  1. You and your child pick out his/her favorite 1-3 toys.
  2. Get your camera, and have fun taking photos of the toys in different places (i.e. all around the house, outside in your garden, at the local park, or beach, etc.) Let the kids take some photos, too. Be creative and have fun with this part!
  3. Select which photos you like the best, and print them on your home printer or a CVS, Target, or Walgreen’s instant photo machine.
  4. Slide the picture in a frame and hang on their bedroom walls!

*Another optional step: 5. Buy an unfinished frame at Michael’s or Ikea, and paint it together!

That’s it! It’s a fun day activity, the pictures on your child’s bedroom walls will mean so much more to them, and it’s a great future memento. Here’s an example of one that I did for my photography class:

It was a toy I had stuck in a drawer, and I took it to the curb outside of my house. All I did was crop it to get the acquired affect I was looking for!

Have fun! Pam ∞

Paints, Dyes, and Ties

Welcome The New Rose Ribbon Featured Artist,

JoAnn Stevens-Flores

Get to know her…

When I’m not crafting I’m… I’m drawing or painting, does that qualify as “crafting?”
This quote best describes me… “So much to do so little time.” I have become pretty selfish with my time, especially over the past year. In today’s world there is SO much to learn. Between, Blogging, Facebook, Twitter, all the Photos I need to take, learning Photoshop, my desire to learn to sew…..it goes on and on! At the end of the day I’m bummed I didn’t have more time to Create! Time management is huge!
Don’t tell anyone but… I really need to stop cursing.
My recent discovery was… How much I love working with fabric.

A Little Bit About JoAnn:

JoAnn Stevens-Flores is a mixed media Artist. She received her Bachelor’s Degree in Art (Studio) from Sonoma State University. Her emphasis in college was drawing although she took everything from Art History, 3DDesign, Ceramics, Watercolor, Oil and Acrylic Painting, Life Drawing and of course all sections of Drawing from Beginning to Advanced.

She is currently working on new paintings, hand-dyeing and painting fabrics and learning to sew. She is passionate about using what’s on hand
and trying to recycle anything from a cardboard coffee sleeve to old clothing.

JoAnn has worked as an Art Department Coordinator and Accountant in the TV and Film Industry for over 12 years. She recently landed a part-time job with Universal, which has now allowed her to focus again on her Art.
